Straight and Crooked Thinking and Alias Hub at Back Lane West, Redruth, Cornwall
Saturday 27 November 2010 www.backlanewest.org
For Back Lane West's first Straight and Crooked Thinking event, an afternoon of ideas, discussion and food, we have joined with Alias to host an Alias Hub with the aim of providing space for dialogue and peer support. Megan Wakefield will be leading the discussion with a presentation of a paper which explores early reflections on her research findings, in particular self-constructed spaces for interaction between artists, aspirations for these spaces, the ethics and emotional landscape of encounters. This paper was first presented at the Art School Alternatives symposium in Liverpool in October. Megan is studying for an AHRC-funded collaborative doctorate with Spike Island and UWE in Peer Learning in Contemporary Art Networks. She works with the Associates Programme at Spike Island programming events and activities, as well as coordinating the Associates reading group. She is also a freelance art writer and has collaborated on several projects which explore art, text and language, including Art & Writing (Spike Island, 2009), Reading for Readings Sake (Islington Mill, 2010) and Tertulia (Arnolfini, 2010).

Artdept - Rebecca Weeks and Ian Whitford
Periodically, aliasarts.org invites a guest editor to contribute with texts and images, and generate and moderate discussions.
Artdept have focused within their editorship on gathering information about current projects from artist led initiatives across the South West.
This is a time of growth, heightened ambition and achievement for the artist led sector and Artdept felt that this should be celebrated and documented in some way and that the ALIAS website would be an appropriate repository for information about the wealth of activity taking place.

Rebecca has written a new essay to accompany the Artdept editorial titled 'Artist Led Culture And Cultural Democracy' which reflects the central position of artists to driving not only cultural production but also discourse forwards.
