Formed in 2004, Level 2 is a group of visual artists working in studios on the water’s edge at Falmouth Wharves. The artists originally came together to meet other artists working locally, to share and create opportunities for artists, and to work together on projects that would bring the group into contact with new audiences.
Level 2 consists of a core group of six artists, almost all of whom have graduated in visual arts practice. The artists work in a range of media including installation, film, sculpture and painting, and their individual concerns bridge a wide range of interests from the environment to memory.
When it was discovered that the Wharves where Level 2 worked were due to be redeveloped, the group saw the potential for its first major project and developed ‘Wharf: a Secret History’, which involved the local community in researching and recording part of its vanishing waterfront heritage. This first, year-long project ended in December 2005 with a successful exhibition of contemporary art inspired by the Wharves and its history.
