Gill Nicol
I trained as an artist in the 1980’s and showed prints in many exhibitions over a period of fifteen years. At the same time, I taught and lectured at a number of different institutions, including the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds; Christ’s Hospital School, Horsham and Tate Liverpool.
In 1996-98, I returned to college to study for an MA in Feminism and the Visual Arts, with Griselda Pollock at University of Leeds. This came about after being mentored for a year by Andrew Wheatley from the Cabinet Gallery in London. Since 1999 the work I have made has been fitted around my increasing engagement with supporting artists in their practice.
From Oct 98 to Sept 2000, I worked for Engage (national association for gallery education), working with fourteen galleries across England to organise and deliver projects of high quality with sustainable outcomes. I then became the Curator of Education and Interpretation at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham (2000-2002), and have since worked as a freelance arts consultant for MAC (midlands arts centre, Birmingham), Arnolfini Gallery Bristol, Tate Liverpool and Arts Council England.
In 2004, I concentrated on training and research into creative teaching and learning in my role as CPD Co-ordinator for Creative Partnerships in the Black Country. I also worked as the ArtsMatrix Professional Development Co-ordinator for creative practitioners in Bristol and Bath. Working one-to-one with artists and other creative people has reflected my commitment to reflective practice, critical dialogue and research. At the moment I form part of Alias' core group and am returning to my art practice.
