Julie Penfold
Julie was co-founder of artist-led group PVA in 1996 and is director of LabCulture Ltd an artist resource and multi-media studio space established 6 years ago. Julie has worked with artist led initiatives since 1991 and has significant experience of project development, working with young people and international work.
She facilitates the LabCulture residency programme and has worked with many artists to develop new projects. Recent projects include:
- a collaboration with artist group sas projects and practitioner ivon oates, developing a series of new works inspired by a Observer Corps bunker (observation post) in east Dorset;
- developing a series of residencies and projects in Dorset with the title Silicon Coast;
- facilitating a LabCulture Symposium, 'Art, Lifestyle and Globalisation', at Tate Modern;
- coordinating the studio's international exchange programme (focusing on a curatorial project with artists Ming Wong and Jason Lim to coincide with the Singapore Biennale).
Julie is the co-curator of a number of new media related events and exhibitions including swipe Media Festival (2000), LabCulture Symposium((2002/04/05), Performance Related Pay (Simon Poulter/Aspex Gallery), EU Paradise (Olga Jurgenson/PDA), ReThink - ReThinkingTime at Substation Singapore, Bunker Project (Worth Matravers) and Silicon Coast (Andrew Lovett, audio commission). As an artist-educator Julie has worked on a number of arts education and outreach projects with young people, including as Executive Producer for the film “Taking Pictures” (PVA/First Light/UK Film Council).
